En Plein Air - Capturing and Releasing the Magic
-
Intro
Let me show you how I capture the magic in a sketchpad and then release it later onto a larger page. Paiting outside may sound daunting, but trust me, there's nothing better. And oh boy are you going to get good. This course is sponsored by www.enpleinairpro Artist Field Easels.

Lesson 1: “The Set Up”
From easel to paintbox. I reveal all!
-
Lesson 2: “Sketch Pads”
I’m currently using wide 300g Rough Baohong sketchpads. I also use 300g Moleskin pads.
-
Lesson 3: “Location”
Heading out into nature here. This is one of my favourite parts of En Plein Air painting. Don’t get too fussy with subjects, a few trees and some hills in the distance will do just fine. Don’t risk venturing on to Private Property without permission!
-
Lesson 4: “Capturing the Magic”
Nothing steepens your learning curve faster than going outside and seeing all the nuances that a 2d photograph can’t offer. Like the colour in the shadows and the subtle shift of values. It’s good for the mind, body and soul!*
*theres actual scientific studies that back this up! Stating that being out in nature increases your life longevity.
-
Lesson 5: “The First wash”
Lets get that sketch book wet. We’re extra open to mistakes here, that's what sketch pads are for, no inhibitions, great for learning.
-
Lesson 6: “Sketchbook Middle Tones”
This is the second wash, the middle value, we’ll also get in a few darks here. Ahh, the joy of being outside…
-
Lesson 7: “Back in the Studio”
Now we can have some more fun, this scene just keeps on giving. We’ll get the pencil draft down while using our sketch pad magic as reference.
-
Lesson 8: “ Releasing the Magic”
This is it. The moment we’ve all been playing so hard for. Releasing the last bit of magic onto the larger page. The final painting of the course. And the good news is that it’s only the start of our adventure together. Every Friday will be new content so we can all grow to be Master Watercolour Artists together. Don’t forget to hashtag #freedomwithwatercolour any of your posts so that I can see your progress. See you soon and stay free!
